MILLIONS face being struck down by a deadly winter vomiting bug that is sweeping the UK.

Hospitals have been forced to close wards to new patients as they struggle to cope with the influx of norovirus sufferers. One of London’s leading hospitals has even had to turn away 999 emergency patients after being overwhelmed with cases of the virus.

At its height last year the virus 3 million people where affected. The virus causes projectile vomiting, diarrhoea, mild fever and headaches. The illness can prove deadly for the vulnerable – children and the elderly.

St George’s hospital, one of London’s three major trauma centres, was forced to turn away ambulances last Monday because it had run out of beds.

“Christmas and New Years are a notoriously busy time and the fact that hospitals can’t cope already is very, very ominous. Winter and Christmas are always extremely difficult for hospitals." said Geoff Martin, of the group Health Emergency.

NEW YORK – Target Corp. said Monday it will aggressively cut prices to give consumers bargains during the holiday season, after weak sales of its apparel and home offerings led third-quarter earnings to fall 24 percent.

"The increasing financial challenges and economic uncertainties facing American households continued to pressure our performance during the third quarter," Chief Executive Gregg Steinhafel said during a conference call with analysts.

The company will also offer half a dozen "value items" online every day at special prices.

"We have taken a very aggressive point of view this year in terms of our promotional pricing, so we expect to be price leaders on selected items in our circular," Steinhafel said. "This is not unlike what we've done in the past. But given the current environment and recognizing how challenging it is, we will be even sharper than we have in prior years."

The Obvious News Story of the Day: "The 99 Cents Stores to Raise Prices..." The End of the World is Here!!

The 99 Cents and discount super store on Monday announced the first price increase in its 26-year history, raising the cost of household items, food and other items by almost a penny.

The company blamed inflation and rising food and energy prices for its new 99.99-cent prices.

The increase means the maximum price in the stores will still fall below a dollar while helping the company offset some of the higher costs of doing business, CEO Eric Schiffer said.

The company has posted two consecutive quarterly losses. The company said last month it lost $1.5 million, or 2 cents a share, during the April-to-June period. During the same period last year, 99 Cents Only Stores earned $3 million, or 4 cents a share.

The company, founded in Los Angeles, is the nation's oldest dollar chain store. It has expanded to 277 locations in California, Nevada, Arizona and Texas.

Rent to close on Broadway after 12-year run

After more than 12 years on the Great White Way, (THIS IS ONE REASON WE DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT THEATRE, I'M NOT SURE WE'RE WELCOME ON "THE GREAT WHITE WAY".. BUT ANYWAYZ.) the musical Rent will play its final show on Sunday, September 7, 2008, winding up a 5,124 performance, 16 preview run. Currently the seventh-longest running show on Broadway, Rent has grossed more than $280 million during its time there. The show played its entire Broadway run at the Nederlander Theatre.
Rent pioneered some now widespread marketing tools, including being the first show to sell same-day orchestra seats for $20. As a result of this practice, it became a common sight to see fans lining up the night before for tickets. The practice was later changed to a lottery system, one which many other Broadway shows soon copied.
Over the years, Rent has been translated into every major language and has been performed on six continents. Some of the countries the musical has played in include Argentina, Australia, Chile, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungry, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

The Obvious News of the Day Story: "Guess Who's Dumb Ass is Headed to Jail!!" vol. 2

Disgraced, Dishonarable, Discredited, Embarrassed, Humiliated AND Shamed Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has pleaded guilty, ending a nearly eight-month drama that has transfixed the region, paralyzed much of city business and halted a political career that once held such promise.

Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to two felony counts of obstructing justice by committing perjury. He will spend four months in jail, pay up to $1 million in restitution, and serve five years' probation. He also agreed not to run for office during that five-year span.

In January, the Free Press published text messages Kilpatrick and Beatty exchanged on city-issued pagers. The article showed the pair lied under oath when they testified in a police whistle-blower trial last year that they did not have an intimate relationship. They also gave misleading testimony about the firing of a top police official, Gary Brown. Nelthrope was another cop who sued with Brown, both alleging their careers were ruined because of their involvement in an internal affairs investigation that could have led to the discovery of extramarital philandering by Kilpatrick.

It's Not a Game - Protect Yourself!

In NYC, New HIV Infections 3 Times National Rate
NEW YORK (AP) ― New data indicate New York City residents are contracting the virus that causes AIDS at three times the national rate.

The city health department said Wednesday that almost 4,800 New Yorkers were infected with HIV in 2006. The number represents 72 in every 100,000 residents, compared to a national rate of 23 per 100,000.

The figures are the first to pinpoint when people became infected, not just when they were diagnosed. Better blood tests have helped make that possible.

Health officials attribute the city's relatively high rate of new infections to its large populations of gay men, blacks and other groups on whom HIV has traditionally taken a heavy toll.

Assistant health commissioner Dr. Monica Sweeney says the figures underscore the continued need to promote HIV testing and prevention.

Many of you talk about voting and I know damn well many of ya'll ain't registered and don't even know how to get registered and it's allll good, but that type of shit ain't good enough no more. I'm here to help you do something positive. It is necessary for you to vote for our survival... Be a part of the Change.

You can get a voter-registration card at your county's department of elections, a library branch, the DMV, or any post office. You can even download a voter-registration card HERE. Your completed vote-registration card must be postmarked 15 days before the Presidential election, which is scheduled for Tuesday, November 4, 2008. Make sure you either take it to a post office or leave it in a mailbox that has pick-up before the end of the day. If you live in Los Angeles, you can verify that you're registered to vote by calling (562) 466-1323. For other counties, call your county's department of elections.

Voting is a very basic way to make your voice heard becasue you know we don't give a shit here. Read about the candidates and initiatives, you'll inform yourself about political issues, ask bigger questions, and get involved. At the very least, you'll have an influence on the policies and leaders of your county and state.
